TRB Webinar: Principles and Practices of Quieter Pavements

Designing and constructing quieter pavements can be accomplished using the same materials and techniques commonly used today. However, there remain knowledge gaps in how to do so effectively, and without compromising other important characteristics including safety, durability, and cost. This webinar will introduce the principles and practices of designing & constructing quieter pavements. It is intended to educate noise practitioners on the fundamentals of pavements, and to educate pavement practitioners on the fundamentals of noise.

At the conclusion of this workshop, the audience members should be able to:
• Discuss some of the fundamentals of sound and texture.
• Describe research and policy directions related to the use of quieter pavements.
• Illustrate how quieter pavements are measured and interpreted.
• Categorize the mechanisms that lead to tire-pavement noise.
• Develop an approach for incorporating quieter pavement design and construction principles into their current practices.
• Evaluate the role of a quieter pavement among other needs including safety, durability, and cost effectiveness.

TRB Webinar: Entering and Managing Project Records in the Research in Progress (RiP) Database

TRB will be conducting a web seminar or “webinar” on August 11, 2011, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EDT that will enable individuals to become familiar with entering and managing project records in the Research in Progress (RiP) Database.

The Transportation Research Board's RiP website is a leading tool for transportation professionals to stay updated on the status of world-wide transportation research projects. The website contains the Research in Progress (RiP) Database and a data-entry system to allow users to add, modify, and delete information on their current research projects. The RiP database contains more than 12,000 current or recently completed transportation research projects. Most of the RiP records are projects funded by federal and state departments of transportation. University transportation research is also included. The RiP Database serves as a clearinghouse of University Transportation Centers’ ongoing research. International research projects from the TRIP file of the International Transport Research Documentation Database are included in the RiP database, and the Transportation Association of Canada supplies records from its Canadian Surface Transportation Research Database.

At the end of this training webinar users will know how to:

• Submit a new project using the form on the RiP web site;
• Upload a batch of project records;
• Locate records from your organization;
• Modify or delete an existing project record from your organization;
• Submit or modify information on a person, e.g. project manager;
• Submit or modify information on an organization.

TRB Webinar: Six Top Road Safety Papers from the 2011 Annual Meeting

The six nominated papers and webinar panelists are:

1. “Development of a Hardware-in-the-Loop Testbed for Evaluating Truck Safety Systems”

Kelly Donoughe, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute
This paper explores a hardware-in-the-loop system that can be used to test in-truck safety technology.

2. “Relating Flow, Speed, and Density of Urban Freeways to Functional Form of a Safety Performance Function”

Jake Kononov, Colorado Department of Transportation
This paper relates traffic flow parameters such as speed and density with the choice of the functional form of the Safety Performance Functions (SPFs).

3. “Simulation Study of Access Management at Modern Roundabouts: Pedestrian Crosswalk Treatments”

George X. Lu, University of Vermont Transportation Research Center
This paper quantitatively assessed the performance of four pedestrian signals placed at roundabouts to help provide the access management community with one objective basis for identifying crosswalk treatments to improve roundabout accessibility.

4. “Field Evaluation of Automatic Pedestrian Detectors in Cold Temperatures”

Jeannette Montufar, University of Manitoba
This paper explores results of a field performance analysis of three commercially available curb-side automatic pedestrian detectors (APDs) as a function of weather, temperature, and temporal variations at signalized intersections for winter months.

5. “Measurement of Company Car Drivers' Aberrant Behaviors, Safety Attitudes, and Safety Climate Perceptions”

Oren Musicant, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel
This paper evaluates a questionnaire that was provided to 110 company car drivers to better understand their aberrant behaviors, safety attitudes, and safety climate perceptions.

6. “Tractor Trailer Rollover Prevention: The Effectiveness of Electronic Stability Control Systems”

John Woodrooffe, University of Michigan Transportation Institute (UMTRI)
This paper estimates the effectiveness of electronic stability control systems (ESC) and roll stability control systems (RSC) in preventing heavy truck tractor-semitrailer rollover.

Trial access to the National Technical Reports Library (NTRL)

I have arraigned for us to have a trial subscription to the National Technical Reports Library (NTRL). NTRL provides easy access to federally funded technical reports in all subject areas “directly and seamlessly to the user's desktop.” A description of the database can be found here - https://ntrlbeta.ntis.gov/about.php

You can access the database from any LTRC and DOTD networked computer at https://ntrlbeta.ntis.gov and linked from the Library’s web site, through May 23, 2011. Please try it out and let me know what you think. How useful do you think this would be to your work and research?

The TRIS and ITRD Databases are now TRID!

Hi all,
If you haven’t already heard, the TRIS database is no more. In its place, we now have TRID which combines the resources from TRIS with RiP (Research in Progress) and ITRD (International Transport Research Documentation) from the OECD's Joint Transport Research Centre. This will give us access to many more resources and open up our research to include what is going on outside of the US.

If you have any questions or comments about TRID please let me know. If don’t know the answer I will certainly find out for you, and I will pass on any comments you have.

The Transportation Research Board and the Joint Transport Research Centre of the International Transport Forum and OECD are pleased to announce that TRID - the TRIS and ITRD Database was launched at TRB’s 90th Annual Meeting on 23 January, 2011.

TRID offers:
One database to locate research from around the world
Multilingual database with records in English, German, French or Spanish
More than 900,000 records of published or on-going research
Indexing from the Transportation Research Thesaurus or the multilingual ITRD thesaurus
Free access to the public at TRB’s website

TRID offers flexibility in searching. It includes both simple and advanced query screens and offers browsing of recent publications by mode. When available, links are provided to the full text of the document or to direct ordering information. TRID allows users to print, download, directly e-mail, or share search results and also offers users the ability to subscribe to RSS feeds to receive notification of the latest publications on a specific topic. The TRID website includes “Hot Topic” searches on subjects of current interest.

TRID is available at http://trid.trb.org

The TRIS and TRISworld databases will be available through 30 January, 2011. On 31 January the URLs for TRIS and TRISworld will permanently redirect to TRID. TRID is very similar to TRIS and TRISworld and thus we expect that users will easily transition to using TRID.

It is now possible to search the RiP (Research in Progress) database at the same time you are searching TRIS. This will cut an extra step out of the research process – one which is sometimes forgotten! For details please see the announcement below:

All,

We have received many requests for this capability so I am pleased to announce that users may now search the Research in Progress (RiP) and the TRIS or TRISworld Databases simultaneously.

To search TRIS or TRISworld and RiP simultaneously, start at either tris.trb.org or trisworld.trb.org. From the Simple Search interface, check the box below the search box to include projects from Research in Progress. On the Advanced Search interface, from the Result Type dropdown list simply select “All Publications and Projects” to search TRIS or TRISworld and RIP. To search only RiP select “Only Projects.”

Please note the following when searching the databases simultaneously:

• Projects from RiP are identified by “Project” at the beginning of the search result title

• Persons field = author or editor in TRIS or TRISworld records; project manager or principal investigator for RiP records

• Organizations field = corporate author, publisher or availability agency in TRIS or TRISworld records; sponsor or performing agency in RiP projects; source organization for both reports and research projects

• Identifier field = report number or contract number

• Date Range field = published date for reports in TRIS or TRISworld and start date for projects in RiP.

These explanations can also be found from the Advanced Search interface by clicking on the field name or in the field search box.

I received this anouncement today:

The Transportation Research Board and the Joint Transport Research Centre of OECD are pleased to announce that International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) and the Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) Database will be integrated into a new product to be called TRID (the TRIS and ITRD Database). After a review of the ITRD Database, the JTRC voted to combine the two database and offer this new international transportation resource for free on TRB’s web site.

TRID will offer:
• One database to locate research from around the world
• More than 800,000 records; each record is available in English, French, German or Spanish
• Both the TRT and the multilingual ITRD thesaurus
• Free access to the public at the TRB’s website

TRID will be launched at the TRB Annual Meeting in January 2011. More details will be forthcoming during the fall.

TRB's RiP Database and the European Commission's TRKC collaborate on providing access to international transportation research projects

TRB’s Research in Progress (RiP) Website is increasing its coverage of international transportation research projects. The European Commission’s Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC) is now starting to supply TRB with European transport research projects. With over 6000 research projects profiled in its database, the Transport Research Knowledge Centre is the major European portal to offer a comprehensive source of information on transport research activities across Europe.

The website also includes details of national and international research organizations and funding programs, as well as a useful events calendar and a series of publications analyzing the policy context and research environment for a wide range of specific transport sectors and themes.

PANELLISTS BIOGRAPHIES

Daniel Calto is the Director of Product Management for the Performance, Planning, and Funding team in the Academic and Government Products Group. As head of the team, Daniel is responsible for long-term strategic planning of products and services in the areas of performance and planning for research universities and government funding agencies. He has a strong professional interest in research and development policies and their relation to economic growth, and the how the changing global research landscape is reshaping the scientific enterprise. In addition, he has an interest in the innovative use of technology to enable more productive research.

Prior to joining Elsevier, he was the director of research strategy and senior director of research administration at Columbia University in New York, and before that he was the Director of Sponsored Programs Administration at New York University Medical School. He has a Masters in Business Administration from New York University, where he majored in Finance and International Business.

Kevin Carman is Dean of the College of Basic Sciences at LSU, a position he has held since 2005. Prior to this, Kevin was Associate Dean for Finance and Administration in the College of Basic Sciences. He is also a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, where he has taught and conducted research since coming to LSU in 1989. Research interests include eenvironmental impact of CO2 sequestration on deep-sea communities, and trophic interactions between marine sedimentary microorganisms and benthic metazoa. Kevin received his PhD in Biological Oceanography in 1982 from Florida State University.

James C. Garand, Ph.D. is the Emogene Pliner Distinguished Professor of Political Science at LSU, and also serves on the faculty of the Manship School of Mass Communication. He is a Senior Fellow at the Reilly Center for Media and Public Affairs. Jim has teaching and research interests in the fields of legislative politics, electoral politics, public opinion, public policy, state politics, domestic political economy, and methodology and statistics. His research on a wide range of topics in American politics has been published in numerous journals. A recent work of his involving assessment, "Ranking Political Science Journals: Reputational and Citational Approaches," was published in PS: Political Science and Politics. Jim was the recipient of the LSU Foundation Distinguished Faculty Award in 2001, recognizing excellence in graduate teaching.

Peter Kelleher is Associate Vice Chancellor for Intellectual Property, Commercialization & Development. Peter serves as the industrial liaison, providing economic development leadership for both the LSU and the LSU AgCenter campuses by developing relationships with government, business, agriculture and industry leaders. His responsibilities include identifying, patenting, copyrighting and marketing new inventions and original works. In addition, Peter helps introduce LSU researchers and inventors to venture capitalists to promote the creation of new start-up companies.

Peter came to LSU in 2007 from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he served as senior technology manager for the Center for Technology Development. He has more than 25 years of experience in developing and promoting intellectual property and evaluating the commercial potential of a broad range of early-stage university discoveries and technologies. Prior to his time at the University of Texas, Kelleher served as associate director of business development at Zonagen, Inc. and Vice President of Research at Houston Biotechnology, Inc.

Anna K. Nardo is Alumni Professor of English at LSU and Chair of the English Department. She has authored several books, including “Milton's Sonnets and the Ideal Community,” “The Ludic Self in Seventeenth-Century English Literature,” and “George Eliot’s Dialogue with John Milton.” In addition to the aforementioned, her research interests include Shakespeare and film, about which she has written extensively. TRIS and TRISworld continue to grow!

SWOV and TRB are please to announce that SWOV is now providing records of SWOV reports and publication to the TRIS Database and are now included in both TRIS Online and TRISWorld. The records of SWOV publications are in English and SWOV publications have an English summary although the full text is often in Dutch. Most of SWOV publications are available full text on the SWOV Web site and TRIS contains links to the full text. The SWOV library will also provide copies of SWOV publications.

SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research is the Dutch national road safety research institute. It is SWOV's task to contribute to improving road safety through scientific research. In The Netherlands the SWOV library is the national centre for road safety literature. It also has a great deal of literature on traffic, transport, and other related subjects. In its 45 years existence, the collection has grown to more than 135,000 titles including, books, reports, congress proceedings, and journal articles, etc. The library has nearly 350 journals that can be consulted. Everyone who (professionally) deals with road safety can use the SWOV library and use the on-line catalogue to search for relevant publications. Many of these are already digitally available, and this is indicated by a link to the database. SWOV Library is very proud to participate in TRISonline and offer its vast collection to an even broader audience.

Improved access to TRB resources for La DOTD!

A couple of announcements for this spring:
Until recently there have been problems with LA DOTD access to the access restricted materials available online from TRB - Transportation Research Reports in particular. That problem has been resolved and now everyone logged into the LA DOTD network should be able to access the online TRB resources. If you have any problems getting in, let me know and we will work it out.

This Spring TRB announced the launch of TRISworld, a database which combines the resources of TRIS with the English language records of the International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) Database.

TRISworld provides users with both simple and advanced search screens. In addition, users are able to browse recent publications by mode. Selected records can be printed, downloaded, or directly e-mailed to others. Access to TRISworld is controlled by IP authorization. Employees of sponsoring organizations of TRB can log into TRISworld at http://trisworld.trb.org.

TRISworld is available to all TRB sponsors, so anyone on the LA DOTD network should be able to access it. Again, if you have any problems getting in, let me know and we will work it out.

This is great news - a helpful development for researchers...
**Science.gov has been added to the library "Research Links" page.**

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has joined Science.gov. This means that when you launch a search at the Science.gov gateway, your single query can find science information from 14 government agencies, including the DOT National Transportation Library (NTL) Integrated Search and more than 30 DOT websites. Major subject areas of highway and transportation engineering, statistics, planning, policies, and research are included in the Science.gov basic search and advanced search options.

Included in the DOT NTL Integrated Search are:

·      TRIS Online, including the disciplines of planning, finance, design and construction, materials, environmental issues, safety and human factors and operations for the modes of highways, transit, railroads, maritime and aviation. TRIS focuses on transportation research.

·      NTL Digital Repository, primarily technical, research, and policy documents provided by federal, state, local, tribal, and other government agencies.

·      Other Transportation Websites and NTL Catalog

“The National Transportation Library brings a wealth of important science content to Science.gov,” said Eleanor Frierson, Deputy Director, National Agricultural Library and co-chair of the Science.gov Alliance. “The inclusion of the DOT NTL Integrated Search adds approximately 680,000 records and full-text documents that citizens everywhere will find useful.” Science.gov provides search of 200 million pages of science information and research results. A single query searches across 38 databases and portals and more than 1,900 websites. The information is free and no registration is required.

I will be out of the office...

I will be out of the office for most of the next 5 weeks. This is good because I hope to come back with lots of ideas and a better understanding of this transportation library thing :) It’s also problematic because I will just be out most of the time!

I have been doing some rough organizing of the library stacks and I’ve placed general labels on the outside of the shelves to help you locate items.

All of the FHWA materials have been grouped by their FHWA letters/numbers. They are not all in perfect order, but if you have that number and we have the item you should be able to find it.
I’ve been sorting the materials we have from other DOTs by state. Again, not in perfect order, but If you know the state, and we have the item you should be able to find it.

If you have a research request go ahead and send me an e-mail, but I won’t be able to work on it until July.

Same goes for requesting materials from other libraries. I won’t be able to take care of that until July, BUT hopefully by that time we will be very close to having out own system in place and I can borrow materials directly without having to go through LSU Libraries!!!

So, just what is that box on the right side of the library web page?

Technically, it’s called a MeeboMe widget. Practically, it’s an application which allows you to chat directly with me anytime I am logged in. Just look for the green light, and “library is online.”

Then type here where it says “type here.” A message box will pop up on my computer and I can chat with you. If you have a library or research question, this is the quickest and easiest way to get in touch with me.

One more neat trick, look down here, where it says "edit nickname: Isaac." On your screen it will probably say "edit nickname: meboguest followed by random numbers." If you click that box the text will clear and you can enter your name. That way I will know who I’m chatting with.

Look to the right on this blog page. There's a MeeboMe box here too!

A large collection of management and training materials have been donated to the LTRC Library. While I work on setting up a permanent catalog I’m using an online catalog system called “Library Thing” to make organizing and accessing these books a little easier. There are a number of different ways to browse or search the collection, so take a look when you get a chance. I’m adding a few items every day, so the catalog is growing, but it will take some time for everything to be included :) Keep checking back!

Accessing ASTM Standards

Recently I was asked to help someone get access to some ASTM standards. LSU Libraries offers access to ASTM Standards Source, a database which gives you the full text of all ASTM Standards, but for some reason we couldn’t get the database to work in our offices. As it turns out, because of the licensing agreement between LSU Libraries and the database publisher, you have to be on the LSU network and logged into an LSU account in order to get into the database.

After several days, a lot of trial and error and much help from Scott Mentor and Chris Schwehm, I now have a way to access the database. Thanks guys! It’s kind of a back door in and it takes a little while, but it works! Unfortunately, I can’t make the database available on a public computer right now. If you have a standard you need, just let me know and I can download it and e-mail it to you.

Now that I am more settled in and have a little bit of an idea what I’m doing here, I would like to formally introduce myself and offer my services as librarian. I worked in the reference department of Middleton Library, the main library here on LSU’s campus, for almost 12 years. All of those years have given me extensive experience helping people with research on just about every topic, including transportation. I will admit it is not my strongest subject area, but I am learning, and have an extensive network of people I can call on for help if need be.

Why a "blog?"

First, what is a blog? The word “blog” is short for “web log.” Often blogs are used as online diaries, but also they are a way to post and archive information online. If you are interested, this video explains if much better than I can...

Why would a library need a blog? Well, there will be information that I would like to share with you, after all, that’s why I’m here. I understand that we all get far too much e-mail. If an e-mail is ever read, it is then deleted and soon forgotten. By posting information here, you can access it at your convenience (from your RSS feed reader if you use one), it won’t clog your e-mail, and it will be archived for your future needs. It is easy to find, linked from the LTRC-TTEC Library web site as “Library News.”

I hope to include information such as notices of upcoming seminars or web casts, new publications available, tips about using research resources and notices about any research issues you might need to know – like why the ASTM Standards Source from LSU Libraries doesn’t work in your office. If there is something you would like me to address here, please let me know, I am open for suggestions. If there is anything I can help you with, please ask. That's why I'm here!
